FXR Racing Presents: Recap From Round 1 Of The SXTour

After five rounds of rough tracks and the riders having to deal with long 30 minute motos, tonight marked a change of scenery as Round 1 of the 2020 Rockstar Energy Triple Crown SXTour Series kicked off at Gopher Dunes. The Gopher Dunes SX track has been in place for several years and it’s always been fun to ride. But with a little tweaking from the Jetwerx crew this week it’s now a full-blown miniature SX track. To say that a few riders struggled with the track at the opening round would be a gross understatement. Almost every top rider hit the deck at some point today, some even crashed multiple times. The track was just technical enough to give the riders some trouble and since most haven’t been riding SX for some time (other than maybe some practice this week), everyone figured Round 1 would be challenging.

One rider who looked like he hadn’t missed a beat since his indoor success during the past few seasons was Cole Thompson. After getting diagnosed with some sort of chronic fatigue syndrome last month, Cole has been very busy trying to get his health in order since he pulled out of the MXTour. Right from the opening lap of practice, Cole looked very comfortable at the opening round, and in true Cole Thompson fashion, the worse the track got the better he got. In the end and thanks in part to big mistakes made by Dylan Wright and Matt Goerke, Thompson walked away with both 450SX main event wins tonight. Everyone loves a comeback and for Cole, this win had to feel extra special.

In the 250SX class, Marshal Weltin rode solid at Round 1 and took home wins in both main events. He was followed closely in the second main event by Marco Cannella who did everything but make the pass on Weltin. The two riders finished just feet apart with Weltin taking his second win of the night. Unfortunately, Tanner Ward, who looked very fast in practice, had trouble in both main events and failed to finish on the podium. As they say, tomorrow is a new day and for some, it might just be a brighter day. Round 2 begins with the 250SX Main Event #1 at 4:30 pm.
