Matrix Concepts Canada Presents 3 Q’s With Ryan Lockhart

We have almost reached the middle of June and right across the country the weather just keeps getting nicer and nicer. We have also reached that time in the week when we sit down with Ryan Lockhart to ask him some more questions about current topics in our sport. As you know, Ryan has been in this industry for over twenty years and during that time he’s been a rider, a mechanic, a riding coach, and most recently the Brand Manager over at Matrix Concepts Canada. Ryan knows a lot about a lot of things and he’s always a great guy to talk to. Here are this week’s 3 Q’s with Ryan Lockhart presented by Matrix Concepts Canada.

Ken Roczen is on a roll and Newf is pumped for him! Photo by Matt Wellumson

MXP: Let’s talk about Ken Roczen for a minute. Two rounds into the Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championships and already he’s won three motos. His confidence looks to be back and even getting stronger by the lap. Does anything look different to you with regards to his bike, his riding, or anything?

RL: It is just crazy how good he is right now. It’s no secret that the end of SX was a struggle for Kenny and the fact that he admitted that it was going to take him some time to get going in the outdoors is wild. He’s won 3 out of 4 moto’s and last weekend he looked unstoppable. I thought for sure when he dropped back to 3rd in moto one with 10min to go he was fading but nope… He worked those guys and won. It’s so strange that he can be so up and down but like I have said before these guys are so mental. He looks fit, the bike looks extremely good so after two rounds it looks like his championship to lose. I guess we will see what the heat and humidity of the east coast bring but he’s on it right now.

MXP: This weekend in Ontario the gate will finally drop on Amateur racing. What is the current status of the Future West MX Series?

I’m happy to see you guys are getting started this weekend. By the sounds of it, there is going to be a big turnout at Gopher Dunes. We are still working to get things going out here. The province has a bunch of restrictions being lifted on June 15th and July 1st. We are feeling pretty confident that we will be able to go racing on July 1st in Kamloops. It’s been a struggle that’s for sure but it feels like there is some light at the end of the tunnel finally.

What are some of your pre-race routines or superstitions? Photo by James Lissimore

MXP: A lot of riders and athletes for that matter have superstitions. When you were racing in the pro class did you have any? Did you always try and eat the same food the night before the race or anything like that?

I was never too crazy with superstitions throughout my career. It was always important for me to have things organized and ready to go for Sunday. I found it calming to prepare my goggles on Saturday night to take my mind of the race jitters. Other than that I didn’t really do anything else. Some of these guys are right out to lunch on superstitions that’s for sure.
